Walkmix: headphone soundtracks
Walkmixes are eight freshly-commissioned pieces of original music by Loop guests, inspired by and designed for the walk between Loop’s venues.
Drawing on the artists’ own urban explorations, incorporating field recordings and imagery taken from the route, and drawing in fragments of pop history, and personal memory, these Walkmixes heighten our awareness of the urban environment, its architecture, and its rich history as a site of musical creation.
The Walkmixes exist only on cassette – we’ll have Walkmans for you when you arrive, so just BYO headphones, grab a tape and a player from the stand at the Montalbán Theatre foyer or EastWest Studios lobby, and start walking. There will also be headphones available to borrow for a small refundable deposit.
Cassette culture is a symptom of retromania, to be sure, but we’re not just being nostalgic. This low-tech listening experience is a small tribute to the device that made possible that now taken-for-granted trick of overlaying our daily experiences with a soundtrack of a borrowed atmosphere of romance, danger or adventure. The soundtrack is bespoke – our Walkmix composers have walked ahead of you, read the signs, and planned the ideal soundtrack for your Hollywood Loop.

WDCH Dreams
A collaboration between the multimedia artist Refik Anadol and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, WDCH Dreams is both a huge projection on the building’s exterior, and an immersive audio-visual experience within it. This video showcase at Loop will reveal the process of how the breathtaking installation was created.
Using Google’s machine-intelligence tools, Anadol and his studio applied custom algorithms to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s vast digital archives: as much as 45 terabytes of data. Watch and listen to how Refik approached the process of visualizing and sonifying the data, using deep neural networks of machine intelligence.

Making Orchestral Music, with Nima Fakhrara and Spitfire Audio
Limited Capacity full

The practice of software-based orchestration can seem overwhelming to newcomers. Not only are there nuanced tools to get to grips with, but there are also the musical hurdles of sheet music, reading notation and advanced composition to overcome.
In this workshop, LA-based film and games composer Nima Fakhara together with Oliver Patrice Weder and Homay Schmitz from virtual instrument specialists Spitfire Audio, will examine some approaches to virtual orchestration. They’ll discuss the nature of virtual instruments and the differences between composing for film and games. Plus they’ll look in detail at orchestral sessions from some published game soundtracks, and open up the session for attendees to get advice on their own creative pursuits.
Experience of software-based music-making is required, but that’s all – you don’t need to be able to read or write music notation.
Workshops are for those with tickets that include Workshop and Studio Session access. Groups are small, and require prior registration – ticket holders will be notified via email when sign-up opens on October 16th.

Beat Picnic: making music with field recordings (Friday)
Limited Capacity full

Taking photos and videos of our surroundings and using the images creatively has become a ubiquitous practice. But sound remains a relatively untapped resource in this context, and we often confine ourselves to unnecessarily conventional or controlled environments.
In this special session, sound designer and producer Ally Mobbs leads the group on an expedition to downtown Hollywood, where we’ll enjoy a social lunch and take some field recordings. We’ll then head back to the studio to reflect, and meet later to work on producing a track using just the sounds recorded outside.
As well as connecting with fellow producers outside the studio, we’ll learn which kinds of sounds work well as source material for different applications. The workshop also explores how sounds are related to a sense of memory and place, and how, through field recording, you can add these uniquely personal elements to your music. Together we’ll discover that even a minimal setup can lead to interesting recordings, and that literally thinking outside the box can bring about new and creative ways of working.
No experience is necessary to participate in this session. Please bring your phone to record. Additional recording equipment of your own is optional. Please also bring a USB drive, and the equipment you’re comfortable producing with (laptop, headphones, etc.).
Time and Locations 12:30pm – 2pm
Part 1: Meet for lunch and start recording
Très Sheik, 5960 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028
3pm – 5pm
Part 2: Working time

Sound and Vision: composing for films
With Hollywood on their doorstep, many LA-based musicians work exclusively in composing for films, or score for films alongside their own artistic output.
This discussion will explore the work of two such musicians, Sofia Hultquist and Jimmy LaValle, and reveal the creative processes they undertake when composing to picture.
We’ll learn about the biggest challenges and rewards this kind of work can present, and how it relates to the music they make outside of film. In particular, they’ll discuss the collaboration that takes place between musician and director, and what makes for a successful creative partnership.

dublab: live stream (Friday)
dublab is a non-profit radio station in Los Angeles dedicated to the growth of music, arts and culture.
So much music has been made on the streets of Hollywood, both by legendary artists in world-famous studios, and thousands of session players, engineers, sound designers, writers and beatmakers in the network of independent studios and venues that has existed since the 1950s. In countless collectives and long-gone scenes from all styles of music, music-makers have worked together in and around these streets to create sounds that say something about who they are, where they’ve been and where they’re going.
Since its foundation in 1999, dublab has been working to map this shifting terrain. dublab programs have described the contours of Los Angeles’ sprawling musical life, and shared these stories with an ever-growing international audience. It’s fitting, then, that we’ve invited dublab to provide the soundtrack to your afternoons at Loop’s LA edition. From our rooftop stage at Montalbán Theatre, dublab will daily present four hours of free-form radio, including live performances, DJ sets, interviews and discussions. For summit attendees, it’s an alternate look at our participants, framed by dublab presenters’ deep knowledge of LA’s musical life, past and present. At the same time, the live stream offers our international online audience a window onto the world of Loop, its people, events and ideas.

Schedule 2pm - 4pm
Mike Harding & Gabie Strong w/guest Lawrence English - Long Wave live from Loop
Mike Harding appears in conversation with Australian label-owner and artist, Lawrence English, who runs Room40 and is also a practicing sound artist. Open Source Modular Design
The Maker Zone is an informal space where all attendees are invited to work together with instrument builders, researchers, musicians and visual artists to create something new over the course of a day.
This day will focus on creating audio synthesis tools using open analog and digital platforms – led by artist and synth designer Naomi Mitchell, alongside audio scholar and Delta Sound Labs CEO, Ricky Graham. The project will include patching with open source, visual programming languages, and building analog control and audio processing circuits. Together, Mitchell and Graham will be building and prototyping instruments, exploring granular sampling, sequencing, synthesis, concepts of randomness and more.
Attendees can develop their understanding of instrument design through experimentation with open source software and hardware, plus learn about general elements of audio synthesis, sound design and DSP theory. A basic understanding of electronics and programming is useful, but not essential.

Rewind / Fast Forward: the past, present and future of musical innovation
Electronic music has recently suffered a fate similar to pop culture, with symptoms such as reissue overload, revivalism reunions, and reenactments appearing within dance culture. At the same time, we’re witnessing a counter-tendency that could be dubbed ‘futuremania,’ characterized by a digital maximalist, high-def aesthetic, and the vocal manipulation that’s come to define an era.
This video-illustrated talk explores these questions and many more, taking a snapshot of this crossroads moment, with its clashing impulses to rewind to yesterday and fast-forward to tomorrow.

Track Deconstruction: A Dub Seminar
Dub music and the techniques associated with it can be considered one of the foundation stones of contemporary music production, and in many styles of modern electronic music. The architects of dub: King Tubby, Lee Perry and others, took a truly revolutionary approach, treating the studio as an instrument.
Few people can lay claim to the pedigree of dub’s founders better than Hopeton Brown AKA Scientist. Having learned the craft working under the master himself King Tubby, he went on to work at Channel One and to create some of the defining dub records of the ‘80s. Bringing these decades of experience to bear, Scientist, will walk us through the evolution of his studio practice and the tools and techniques he’s developed to bring dub mixing firmly into the twenty first century.
In the intimate setting of EastWest Studio 1, participants are encouraged to ask questions, and steer the conversation towards insight that you can apply to your own technical and creative practice.

Limited Capacity full

Music Improv Sessions are a fun, friendly and welcoming space for people of all levels of ability to play together and make music. The workshops give tangible form to Loop’s vision of music as a social process, in which we listen to, learn from and collaborate with one another, to make something none of us could have invented on their own.
Facilitated by the founders Fem Synth Lab, a pro-diversity collective bringing communities together through music, this session of focuses on structured improvisation with analog and digital synths, as well as exploring techniques to play electro-acoustic instruments. While learning how to create synth patches and come up with new ways to play traditional acoustic instruments, you’ll also discuss the art and etiquette of improvisation – such as knowing when to step up and when to step back, and how to put patches in conversation to create an interwoven piece.
No experience or equipment are required to attend this workshop. You are welcome to bring a synth or instrument of your own.

Guitar Pedals as Sound Design Tools
Limited Capacity full

In this Workshop, Dustin Ragland and attendees will explore the compositional and improvisational possibilities that arise out of processing acoustic percussive instruments with guitar pedals.
The market for boutique guitar pedals is exploding. Alongside beautiful analog circuitry, DSP development is taking the potential and sound quality of these pedals into sonically uncharted territory. How can we approach this rich field of sound creation beyond using guitars and the sound source? Dustin Ragland uses mic’d percussion as a basis for showing alternative uses of new, experimental guitar pedals.
In this workshop, participants will explore the practical use of analog signal processing on acoustic percussive instruments, including the drum kit, small percussion, and analog drum machines, as well as how to analyze a pedal for certain musical gestures, creating multitrack drum recordings, building loop and sample libraries and creating live performances around pedal-augmented percussion and analog instrumentation.

1500 or Nothin is a collective of skilled players, engineers, producers and award-winning songwriters based out of Inglewood.
Their song credits represent a dizzying who's who of contemporary hip hop, soul and RnB royalty that takes in Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Kanye West. Their adept musicianship has also made them a go-to tour band for the likes of Snoop Dogg, Faith Evans and Jay-Z.
In a mix of discussion and practical demonstration, Jace Clayton will host six members of the 1500 or Nothin' collective for a glimpse behind the curtain. They’ll deconstruct, describe and demonstrate the skills and dedication that’s made them hitmakers to some of the biggest names in pop. And they’ll discuss how they approach some of the different creative challenges they face: what are the communication and collaboration skills required to realise the musical vision of someone like Kendrik Lamar? How do you balance your own creative vision alongside interpreting someone else's? And what is the process to take electronic and sample-based productions into a live band setting?

In this presentation, composer and sound designer, Meara O'Reilly, introduces the musical form known as hocketing. Hockets are a disorienting musical form, created by splitting a single melody across multiple voices in space, often rapidly alternating. The practice dates back to the 13th century, and is found in musical traditions all over the world. In a contemporary context, hocketing can be applied to cognitive research, shedding new light on the curious nature of human musical perception.
Together we’ll learn how to write a hocket, why so-called “disorienting music” plays with the sense of human musical perception, and how these basic principles can be used to both visualize and create new musical ideas.

Please note: Space in Studio 1 is strictly limited. Please arrive early to ensure you'll get in.

Making Music Education Transformative
Music education can teach valuable skills beyond the classroom, helping children to think both creatively and systemically. Yet a range of intersecting issues is eroding accessible opportunities for music education, which is increasingly available only to the wealthy.
In this wide-ranging talk, we’ll hear from three teachers who are fighting to keep music education alive for kids from all backgrounds, and how they are tackling challenges such as budget cuts, outcomes-based approaches, and a growing emphasis on STEM subjects. We’ll learn why they believe in the power of music education to transform students’ lives for the better – not just in the world of music, but as engaged and contributing members of society.

Graphic Scorewriting with Lea Bertucci
Limited Capacity seats available

Graphic scores are compositions written on paper, but instead of using traditional music notation, composers use drawing, painting and typography, or graphs and grids to represent sound. While the creation and interpretation of such scores isn’t as in-vogue as it was the 60s and 70s, working with them still gets music-makers thinking about sound and improvisation in fresh and surprising ways.
In this workshop, composer Lea Bertucci will lead an exploration of creating and interpreting graphic scores. Following an introduction to musical notation methods throughout history, participants will get the chance to try out drawing techniques from disciplines outside of music, like architectural drafting, electronic design and fine art. By experimenting with ways to represent compositional elements like time, timbre, pitch and spatialization, the group will imagine new relationships between sight and sound.
Workshop sessions are for those with tickets that include Workshop and Studio Session access. Groups are small, and require prior registration – ticket holders will be notified via email when sign-up opens on October 16th.

5 Takes (Friday)
Every day at Loop, we’re inviting five people to give short presentations, each offering a different take on music making. Like a good DJ set or an old-time variety show, 5 Takes will see sounds and stories gathered from different musical worlds and thrown together on stage.
These fifteen-minute mini-talks could include big-picture essays on the state of music, detailed analyses of songs and sounds, or frank confessionals about weird sonic obsessions. The five presentations will be delivered by the likes of Juana Molina, Coco Solid and Lawrence English, among other composers, producers and songwriters. We’re also inviting a handful of Loop ticket holders to join them.
It doesn’t really matter what they speak about, as long as it concerns making music and takes no longer 15 minutes to explain. Beyond that, we’d prefer not to spoil the surprise. All you need is an open mind and a short attention span; we’ll provide the people and ideas; and the stage manager with her eye on the stopwatch.

Generating Raw Source Material
Limited Capacity full

Join beatmaker and inventor Ally Mobbs for a session in search of raw source material. In this improvisation, the goal is not to make music right now, but to generate new ideas and material for making music in the future.
By experimenting with a combination of electronic and acoustic instruments, along with home-made sounds and devices, attendees will build up a library of samples, patches and musical ideas that will be shared among the group and, later, with all Loop attendees.
Along the way, workshop participants will gain insight into the ideas and workflows of fellow music-makers, as well as a new approach to improvisation, in which the responsibility of producing a finished musical product is less important than exploring an entire world of sound.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own DIY instruments, circuit-bent noisemakers and found sounds.

On stage or in the studio, musicians work hard to make sure that everything goes perfectly. But it never does. We can create powerful, moving musical experiences for audiences but there are always things that go wrong. At best, no one (besides us) notices.
On this panel, we’ll hear from three musicians with a huge range of musical experiences, including a number of less-than-ideal ones. They’ll share their stories about what went wrong, how they fixed it (or didn’t), and what they learned from the process.

Perception Playground: a workshop with Meara O'Reilly
Limited Capacity filling up

The simple act of listening to music is a creative process. Far from being static or pre-determined by the composer, we shape the sounds we hear into something meaningful. The more we know about our own listening processes, the more interesting and challenging choices we can make in our music.
In this workshop, artist and educator Meara O’Reilly will lead you on an exploration of your own perceptual tendencies for listening, and reveal how they make a fascinating playground for making aesthetic and creative choices. Having considered how auditory illusions can reveal some of the building blocks of musical perception, you’ll discover how these principles can be applied to strategies for listening and your own compositions.
Fundamental knowledge in musical composition is helpful but not essential. You’ll need to bring headphones, and a laptop with Ableton Live.
Workshop sessions are for those with tickets that include Workshop and Studio Session access. Groups are small, and require prior registration – ticket holders will be notified via email when sign-up opens on October 16th.

Touch, Code, Play: creating hybrid physical-digital music instruments
In recent years, the increased availability of affordable microcontrollers and other components has allowed a burgeoning community of maker-musicians to create novel new musical instruments. These hybrid instruments defy commonplace categorizations of controller or synthesizer. They ask us to reconsider the role of electronics and computers in the design of musical instruments.
This panel will explore the world of bespoke electronic music instrument creation, digging into the design, engineering, and performance practices associated with these novel instruments. Using affordable, open components, how does one take an idea through the stages of design, engineering, and ultimately get it onto the stage for performance? How do electronic instruments change when we’re able to move outside the familiar screen and slider paradigms? And what sort of new musical forms might emerge from this work?

Please note: Space in Studio 1 is strictly limited. Please arrive early to ensure you'll get in.

Track Deconstruction: Photay
For many musicians and producers, creating tracks in a studio setting is a solo pursuit. Even those who collaborate, tend to do so within a close-knit circle.
Loop’s Track Deconstruction series offers a window into an otherwise closed process; an opportunity to experience what productions look and sound like ‘under the hood,’ and gain an understanding of how key elements came to be.
In this session, acclaimed electronic music producer, Photay, will walk us through one of his tracks. Starting with the original project file, he’ll describe key elements, map creative decisions, and explain sounds and processing choices, as well as his approach to mixing and finalizing.

Sound in Space: interpreting graphical scores #1
Limited Capacity full

In this Music Improv Session, composer Lea Bertucci will lead a small group of music-makers through interpretations of graphic scores by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pauline Oliveros and Cornelius Cardew.
Unlike those written with traditional western notation, graphical scores aren’t instructions to play certain notes at certain times. They’re more like sets of rules that invite new forms of creative play and an expanded approach to making music with others. By interpreting these scores and experimenting with different combinations of electronic and traditional percussion instruments, Bertucci hopes to facilitate new perspectives on abstract sound and inspire fresh ways of playing and listening to music.

Naming Sounds and Noises
Limited Capacity seats available

In this workshop, Dustin Ragland will use philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s ideas about language and music to give participants new perspectives on how we perceive, react to and talk about the music we listen to and perform.
Participants will be asked to describe a series of short, un-contextualized musical examples using both familiar language and onomatopoeia. Attendees will relate their experience of these sounds to the grammatical components of spoken language.
In performing these exercises, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the connections between our perception of language and our perception of music, using Wittgenstein’s philosophy as a guide. After the exercises, Dustin will present works of music that tie Wittgenstein’s written work to contemporary electronic music and electroacoustic music. The conclusion of the workshop will tie the philosopher’s aesthetics to music education, sound design and communication between creative minds.

dublab: live stream (Saturday)
dublab is a non-profit radio station in Los Angeles dedicated to the growth of music, arts and culture.
Stream directly from dublab.com
Schedule 2pm - 3pm
Mark "Frosty" McNeill w/guest Juana Molina in Conversation - live from Loop
Argentine sound visionary Juana Molina will join dublab co-founder Frosty for a reflective radio session diving into the creation of her most recent album Halo and the expansive field of resonance surrounding her ever-evolving being.
3pm - 4pm
D Tiberio Patterns of Lorena - live from Loop
Enjoy a DJ set by D Tiberio as he hosts his regular monthly dublab program live from Loop.
Patterns of Lorena focuses on left-leaning movements in dance, ambient, experimental and computer music. Selections are often in the moody realm but there are no set rules. Expect new sounds from artists both local and abroad, upcoming Timetable releases and guest selectors.
4pm - 6pm
Callie Ryan w/guest FeM Synth Lab (GHORBA DJ Set) CUTS 01 - live from Loop
The once New York and now LA based DJ, producer, half of the duo DIVORCE, and curator of the night FM+, GHORBA, will be at the live broadcast as the representative from FeM Synth Lab. GHORBA has an incredibly important and special presence in the Los Angeles electronic music community and is a core member of Fem Synth Lab.
After a thirty minute DJ set from GHORBA, dublab DJ, Callie Ryan will conduct an interview which will focus on the proactive, intentional, and inspiring work Fem Synth Lab is doing and how it is contributing to the ever-growing and changing Los Angeles sonic landscape. We will discuss the core principles of the collective, as well as how they go about curating their inventive and important programming.
For the last thirty minutes of the program, Callie Ryan will play a DJ set which will highlight artists who have participated or have been constructive in Fem Synth Lab programming.

Start Here
The products of two artistic journeys can be radically different, even if they start at exactly the same place.
As soon as the compositional parameters are fixed, the individual artist's background, technique and intention become the deciding factor.
In this panel discussion hosted by Andrew Huang, we follow the different paths taken during a creative challenge presented to Ebonie Smith, Nick Weiss and Loop’s worldwide community, in which they all had to turn the same sample into a 90 second piece. The aim being to learn about each other’s ideas, processes and decision making.
Whether you take part in the challenge yourself or just want to understand the work of the artists on stage, the result will be an engaging panel discussion open to explore anything from the philosophical aspects of music making to directly applicable technique.
Both the challenge and the live stream are now over, but we’ll share the outcome on the Loop Hub, as well as on Andrew’s and Ableton’s channels.

Viewed through a postcolonial lens, gendered and racial inequalities in creative music can be seen as part of a deeply imbedded structure.
This workshop positions mindfulness, listening and improvisation as tools for resistance and resilience. Experimental music creator, Sharmi Basu, sheds light on how playing music and improvising can help marginalized people reclaim identities and languages despite the historical distortion of and violence enacted upon their cultures, work, and genders.
The workshop will encourage participants to consider how increased societal and social understanding can bring about a change in the language we use in our own musical practices, how minorities can find ways to process trauma and grief to create new, unhindered spaces for themselves. Also up for discussion will be the importance of shared politics within musical communities, of solidarity through material resistance, and the ways sound can be used to challenge economic, social and institutional oppression.
No experience is necessary to take part in this workshop. Please bring a notebook (optional) and an open mind (essential).

5 Takes (Saturday)
Every day at Loop, we’re inviting five people to give short presentations, each offering a different take on music making. Like a good DJ set or an old-time variety show, 5 Takes will see sounds and stories gathered from different musical worlds and thrown together on stage.
These fifteen-minute mini-talks could include big-picture essays on the state of music, detailed analyses of songs and sounds, or frank confessionals about weird sonic obsessions. The five presentations will be delivered by the likes of Coco Solid, Patrice Rushen and Toni Blackman, among other composers, producers and songwriters.

Max 8’s MC: working with hundreds more audio channels than speakers
In this presentation, Cycling ’74’s CEO and founder David Zicarelli and Content Specialist Tom Hall will introduce us to MC – a new multi-channel audio programming system in Max 8.
MC unlocks immense sonic complexity with simple patching. David and Tom will demonstrate techniques for generating rich and interesting soundscapes that they discovered during MC’s development. The presentation will touch on the psychoacoustics behind our recognition of multiple sources in an audio stream, and will demonstrate how to use these insights in both musical and sound design work. As David explains the ideas behind MC, Tom will open up patches to demonstrate what it can do.

Music and Dance: inspiring ideas through movement
Limited Capacity full

In most cultures, music and dance are inseparable. When musicians and dancers collaborate and share creative practices, it can provide endless jumping off points for musical composition.
In this workshop, composer and instrumentalist Mike Wall will demonstrate the potential of such collaboration. Through discussion, demonstration and live interplay with dancers, he’ll lead an exploration of how music supports movement, and how this movement can in turn inspire musical ideas. He’ll also show how Ableton Live can be used to create a template for improvisation, and capture ideas for further exploration.
Attendees will come away with an improved understanding of how to write music for dance or movement, as well as how to collaborate as a composer and musician across disciplines. A general understanding of music-making is required to get the most out of the session.
Workshop sessions are for those with tickets that include Workshop and Studio Session access. Groups are small, and require prior registration – ticket holders will be notified via email when sign-up opens on October 16th.

Build Your Own Acoustic Synth ($50 material fee)
Limited Capacity filling up

The field of electro-acoustic sound is a deep well of exploration. With even a basic understanding of how to make custom instruments that bridge the organic and electronic, the potential for unique sound generation is huge.

In this session, attendees will be guided through the process of building their own self-sustaining acoustic synthesizer, made by one-string guitars fitted with a pick-up, a driver for string sustain and an amplifier. In addition, there will be a focus on digitally capturing audio from the instrument, analysing pitch and envelope data and using this information to further affect and control the sound. The end result should be an electro-acoustic, generative instrument rich in timbre and loaded with potential for physical and electronic manipulation. The workshop is held by Ricky Graham and assisted by Edwin Park.

Participants will need an interest in DIY electronics and basic music software skills. You’ll also need to have a laptop and headphones. An audio interface is advised but not essential. You can also bring your own metal-stringed instrument for experimentation if you so wish.

Please note that this workshop requires payment of an additional $50 material fee. Registrants will be contacted directly for online pre-payment.

Lafawndah: performative presentation
Lafawndah constructs and deconstructs her compelling new live show on stage at the Montalban Theatre.
As music makers, we might strive to create spellbinding, life-changing live performances, but struggle with the gap between ambition and reality. How can we translate the atmospheres we create on record to experiences in physical space?
Lafawndah’s presentation at Loop seeks to answer these questions by giving us, effectively, the best of both worlds: a compelling live performance by an artist at the peak of her powers, followed by a look behind the curtain at the techniques, processes and people involved in putting her show together. Lafawndah and her team, including frequent collaborator Nick Weiss (Teengirl Fantasy), will show us how they combine lighting, musical arrangement, stagecraft and close collaboration with their front-of-house sound engineer to bring her physically intense and otherworldly music from the studio to the stage.

Shure presents: Track Deconstruction with Kelela
Building tracks in a studio setting is, for many of us, a solo pursuit and for the rest, private to the creator and a close-knit circle of collaborators. Track Deconstructions offer a window into an otherwise closed process, an opportunity to experience what productions look and sound like ‘under the hood’ and gain an understanding of how key elements came to be.
Starting with the original project file, Kelela will walk us through her arrangement, describing key elements, mapping creative decisions, choices of sounds and processing, as well as their approach to mixing and finalising.

In the intimate setting of EastWest Studio 1, there’ll also be plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions, and help steer the session in a direction that you can apply to your own technical practice.

Equiknoxx: five-piece live show
Dancehall mavericks Equiknoxx bring their new five-piece live show to Loop 2018.
Equiknoxx is the forward-thinking Jamaican music production collective comprised of Shanique Marie, Bobby Blackbird, Gavsborg, Kemikal Splash and Time Cow. The Kingston-based crew has firm roots in their local dancehall scene, and continue Jamaica’ long tradition of musical creativity and innovation.
Equiknoxx’s sound has found fans far beyond the borders of the nation and genre they call home. Their tracks eschew party sirens and dancefloor entreaties in favor of bizarre chunks of found sound sampled from their global travels and processed beyond all recognition in their studio. As likely to be found on the bill of an experimental music festival in Poland or Russia as they are at a party in Kingston, Equiknoxx makes music that induces chin-scratching contemplation every bit as much as it lights up a party and fills a dancefloor.

How to Talk About Music: a practical guide
Limited Capacity seats available

Good conversations about music are not always easy to come by.
How can we describe sounds in a meaningful way, share criticism without getting personal, and meet and learn from our musical heroes without embarrassing ourselves? This is a skill you can learn and practice, and its fundamental principle is one that music-makers ought to be very familiar with: listening.
In this workshop, hosted by author and broadcaster Craig Schuftan, we'll learn more about the history and art of conversation, exchange ideas on how to deal with specific situations, and try out some techniques for improving music conversation in practical talk experiments with other Loop attendees. Everyone's welcome and no previous experience is required – just bring yourself.
Workshops are for those with tickets that include Workshop and Studio Session access. Groups are small, and require prior registration – ticket holders will be notified via email when sign-up opens on October 16th.

Beat Picnic: making music with field recordings (Sunday)
Limited Capacity filling up

Sound in Space: interpreting graphical scores #2

Khruangbin meets Scientist
Cosmic surf-funk revivalists Khruangbin meet the dubwise prowess of Scientist, at the controls for a live dub mix of the band.
Devotees of pan-global psychedelia, Khruangbin's music draws on a rich tapestry of influences from Afghani pop, to Thai funk, to Middle Eastern soul. Scientist meanwhile learnt his craft working underneath the mighty architect of dub, King Tubby. What connects the two is a flair for the unconventional and a fearless pursuit of sounds from elsewhere.
We'll talk to Khruangbin to understand their conscious drive towards a sound that traces the threads of a psych-funk diaspora. Joining them live on stage, Scientist will take full control of their sound, mixing the band live on stage in true dub fashion.

Beyond Macros: advanced parameter mapping in Max for Live
Limited Capacity filling up

Applying creative effects to audio is common practice in music production, but what about doing the same for MIDI controls?  By shaping and interweaving control signals, we can add a new dimension of gesturality to our sound design and go to new places musically.
In this workshop, you'll learn to add a new level of detail to your MIDI mappings by designing a layer of processing between your hardware controller and your synths.  You'll use mathematical manipulations, filtering, delays, physical dynamics and similar effects connected in complex ways to create unique musical control systems. Perform timbres and sound gestures in real time to take yourself out of your musical comfort zone and create fresh results.
Attendees should be intermediate to experienced Max for Live programmers.  Bring your own laptop with Max for Live along with your own MIDI controller if possible.  Having a basic level of comfort with numbers and equations will be a plus, but not required to benefit from the workshop.

dublab is a non-profit radio station in Los Angeles dedicated to the growth of music, arts and culture.

5 Takes (Sunday)
Every day at Loop, we’re inviting five people to give short presentations, each offering a different take on music making. Like a good DJ set or an old-time variety show, 5 Takes will see sounds and stories gathered from different musical worlds and thrown together on stage.
These fifteen-minute mini-talks could include big-picture essays on the state of music, detailed analyses of songs and sounds, or frank confessionals about weird sonic obsessions. The five presentations will be delivered by the likes of Maria Chávez, Refik Anadol and Sudan Archives, among other composers, producers and songwriters.

Listening to the Migrant Songbook
In this talk – presented as a live mixtape – author, academic and curator Josh Kun focuses on musical representations of contemporary migrant and refugee struggles, across both the United States and Europe.
The same technologies that give us near-universal and instantaneous access to music allow sounds, styles, and songs to penetrate any corner of the world. But while sounds can move freely these days, people cannot, and so the questions arise: What happens to the music culture and practise of people when they are uprooted and find themselves in new surroundings?
Mixing work from migrant and refugee musicians with sonic experiments in contemporary art and literature, Kun listens for musical responses to a world of forced removals, expulsions, and detentions.

Please note: Space in Studio 1 is strictly limited. Please arrive early to ensure you'll get in.

Teaching Yourself To Make Music Software: Steve Duda in conversation
While almost every electronic musician will use a VST at some point, relatively few know how they are made. Understanding the process can open up opportunities to experiment and create, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and add a useful string to your music-making bow.
In this session, composer, engineer, and self-taught software developer, Steve Duda, reveals how he made the acclaimed virtual synthesizer, Serum. The project brought together disparate worlds, from sound design to software development and from mathematics to music, and its story reveals the challenges and rewards of collaborating with a diverse and multi-skilled community
We’ll find out how VSTs are created and how to teach yourself the skills involved. We’ll also discuss the role of design thinking in making virtual instruments, and how to build a business around it – including elements like marketing and providing ongoing support. Whether you're an aspiring software developer, visual designer, or a musician who uses VSTs, this interactive talk will provide practical insight into the world of professional audio software development.

Sound Design Masterclass #2 with Richard Devine
Limited Capacity filling up

Sound design can mean many things to many people. From practical applications to artistic expression, the possibilities are near-infinite for how to approach sculpting sonic material, and the purpose your sounds can serve.

Beyond his reputation as a skilled electronic music producer, Richard Devine has completed many unusual, high-profile sound design commissions, from user interaction sounds for personal devices to synthetic engine noises for electric cars. He will host a masterclass discussing the creative philosophy and decision-making required for all kinds of audio briefs, as well as his more personal creative output. Using examples from his extensive body of work, he’ll be discussing successes and mistakes he’s made throughout the creative process.

Experience of production will be useful, but the broad nature of Devine’s work will appeal to anyone with an interest in sound design overall.

Workshop sessions are for those with tickets that include Workshop and Studio Session access. Groups are small, and require prior registration – ticket holders will be notified via email when sign-up opens on October 16th.

Breaking Binaries & Building Community: Improvising with Analog & Digital Synths #2
Limited Capacity filling up

Sounds Like Tomorrow: making music for the future
In the intimate surrounds of EastWest Studios 1, where so much of music’s history was made, this panel of Loop guests will discuss what we could – or should – expect from its future.
Since the nineties, if not the seventies, we’ve worried that we might be repeating ourselves, that progress might be exhausted, nothing new left under the sun. Simon Reynolds’ Retromania was an important survey of this tendency, a catalog of circularity and stasis in musical culture, taking in everything from American Graffiti to Boards of Canada, showing, as he put it, how the greatest danger to music’s future might be its past. Whether it’s good or bad, there’s no doubt that many ‘new’ things in music are also recombinations of old ones.
This year, Loop’s weekend begins with a talk from Simon Reynolds, updating some of the conclusions of Retromania in the light of recent developments in music. At its end, we’ll wrap things up with a discussion in which Reynolds, Coco Solid and Gavsborg and Shanique Marie from Equiknoxx talk in depth about the idea of progress in music, and our attitudes toward its past and future. If we still believe in an avant-garde, where do we expect it to go? If we dream of being ‘ahead of our time,’ what do we hope to anticipate (or escape)?

Please note: Space in Studio 1 is strictly limited. Please arrive early to ensure you'll get in.

Primary Optic Shift
Led by interdisciplinary artist Suzy Poling, Primary Optic Shift is an immersive installation that transforms the Optic Shift room in the Ivar Theatre into a space of pure creativity and bliss. The installation consumes the whole room. Three rotating sculptures create refractive light shapes around the room and refract onto other objects. Additionally, three colored, mapped projections coming from all sides will contrast with the stark black and white light refractions throughout the space.
Throughout the history of recorded sound, music-makers and producers have sought out spaces that will inform their practice in particular ways. This could be as simple as a bedroom producer hanging a colored shade over a lamp or as extreme as Einsturzende Neubauten recording in a freeway pylon. Are they looking for a mood, a feeling, a slightly altered state of mind or being that could lead to new ways of thinking? What kind of music would you make in a planetarium, an elevator, or a trailer in the desert? Primary Optic Shift aims to bring this kind of inspiration to attendees taking part in the Music Improv Sessions in this room.
Please note, Ivar Optic Shift only hosts sessions that require pre-registration if you want to experience the installation in its entirety and have not registered for any sessions in this space please visit on Sunday 7pm to 8:30pm.

Binkbeats: performative presentation
Dutch multi-instrumentalist takes us inside his unique live setup, in which he pushes the practice of live looping into new realms.
Binkbeats's performances incorporate a fantastic array of instruments including percussion, bass, guitar, keys, synths, and a battery of ‘non-musical’ objects including typewriters and hand-cranked sirens, looped and layered, one by one. But where many loopists simply cut elements in and out of the mix after this point, Binkbeats performances sound like properly-arranged songs, an effect he achieves with a truly mind-boggling workflow, involving hundreds of automated processes.
Here, he'll talk us through the philosophy, approach and unique technical setup that makes his shows and videos what they are, demonstrate his techniques, and answer your questions.
